Hello, all:

As you may have heard, our bill failed on 3rd reading yesterday.  However, we are not through yet.  A motion to reconsider has just been approved, so there will be another vote next Wednesday (3/31).

The HOAs sent out a deluge of emails to members and we need to do the same.  PLEASE email your legislators and tell them how important this is, not only to you, but to them as well should there be a natural disaster or other emergency.

I've gotten several emails that state this is only a hobby and other people shouldn't be inconvenienced in their homes for someone's leisure activities.  We need to really stress the emergency communications side of this.

I'm counting on you.

Here is a sample of what should be covered in your email or letter.

1.     Please support HB2615 for Amateur Radio.  This is the same bill that passed in the House for the last three years.
2.     Ham operators are part of the Homeland Security network. When all else fails Ham emergency communications are there for our communities.
3.     Hams need your help due to antiquated rules that have not changed with the times.  Most of those rules were made before 9-11-2001.  We are only asking for “reasonable accommodation”.
4.     Hams in Arizona are only in 1 out of every 30,000 Households.  Most Hams only want to have a small antenna on their roof.  The scare tactic of zillions of towers being erected on every block is just that, a scare tactic.
5.     Please help us continue this vital communications service to our communities and our state.

The Arizona Legislature is currently considering our Amateur Radio Antenna bill once again.  All hams are encouraged to email or call asking for your Representatives to support this bill.  In the House we have already passed this bill for the last three years.  Most of the House members are our friends so there is no need to oversell our position.  You will find the 2 Representatives emails and phone for your district at the following website: http://www.azhouse.gov .   Your Senator can be found at http:www.azsenate.gov .

Bill 2615 would require reasonable accommodation of amateur radio antennas by local zoning ordinances and homeowner’s association rules (per PRB-1).  Click here for a PDF copy of the current draft of the bill.

There is a way to indicate support for the Bill from home.  The following is from an assistant to a State Senator who is a friend of mine.  Pass it on if you think it would help.

"There is a way to register support for or opposition to any bill from home. You can sit in your pajamas at midnight and go onto the internet and register your feelings about any bill that is pending in the Arizona Legislature.  This will follow the bill as it moves through committee, to Caucus, to Committee of the Whole, etc.  It becomes part of the official record.  Lobbyists know how to use this system, and they use it well. Average citizens are entitled to use it also.

You MUST come to the capitol ONE TIME.  You register in-person on one of the kiosks outside the hearing rooms.  Once you are officially registered, then you can subsequently communicate from your home computer.  So, plan an outing with your friends, have lunch at the capitol, take a ride when your kids can nap in the back seat, whatever.  Do your best to register on the kiosk so you can make your voice heard!  This does not take the place of email.  It's an additional opportunity to be seen and heard at the capitol."
